A short note about the advantages of alpaca wool

The alpaca fibre is extremely thin and belongs to the group of special fibres. It has excellent thermal insulation properties, it heats much better than sheep wool, and at the same time it is several times lighter than sheep wool. It competes on the market with cashmere, mohair and angora. It is strong and resistant to damage. Due to its special qualities, alpaca wool is considered to be a luxury product in the world.

It’s just a standard description. Of course, the quality of the fibre depends to a large extent on the quality of the alpaca. Individual animals vary greatly in the thickness of the fiber and the main goal of most breeders is to gradually improve the quality through proper selection of the alpacas in the breeding program.

The thinner the fibre (measured in microns), the better, the finer and more gentle the fibre. Products made of alpaca wool worn close to the skin are best made of veils below 22 microns, so called baby alpaca. Thicker fiber can be used for other knitting, and more than 25 microns for weaving, or as a filling for duvets and pillows.

And good news for allergy sufferers / asthmatics: alpaca wool does not cause allergies. Thanks to low lanolin content (animal wax) it is resistant to dirt and dust mites do not develop in it, and for its production and maintenance no chemicals are used. There is no need to dye it, because it comes in 22 natural colors, from white and beige, through various shades of brown and gray, to tarry black.

Products made of alpaca fiber should be washed by hand in warm water up to 30°C with the addition of delicate washing agents. Do not centrifuge, bleach, chlorine, drum dry. This is a yarn from the wool of our alpacas.
