Slip/Skip Patterns

Dlaczego ten splot jest tak nazywany?

Why is this weave called that?

In the patterning process, some needles (in the pattern) are not knitted, and the working thread in this place remains in the form of a free broach on the wrong side of the fabric. We get a horizontal stitch, located on the “weft” of the fabric, so we can shorten this weave “weft”. On imported machines, this weave has its own variant of the name – skip or slip, which can be literally translated as “slip stitch”, “slip”.

Making a Slip weave on the machine

Moda type machine without automatic needle take-up

To weave, we set the machine so that the needles in the pattern remain in place, and the remaining needles (background) move to the PR (working position) and knit, so the carriage sets the appropriate buttons (levers) to the “idle stroke”

On the p/ card (diagram) holes – needles will knit, places without holes – Slip pattern – needles do not knit. ( example ).

When making a pattern, the working thread does not thread some of the needles selected on the p/card (punched card, perfo-card), thus creating free stitches on the wrong side of the fabric, which is considered the front side of the product, although sometimes the reverse side is used. Very often, the punched card (pattern) can be used in other applications. The closest is the pressed weave, because the principle of the binding performed by the machine is the same.

Slip Pattern Yarn

It is good to knit such patterns with one thread with a good twist. If you knit with soft thin threads in several folds, the effect of the pattern itself will not be noticeable. Although the pattern is created on the wrong side of the material, it often happens that the front side becomes the main side.

These patterns can be single-colored or can be made with a color change, usually after two rows. For single-colored patterns, it is better to choose a smooth and well-twisted thread. If the thread is soft, the pattern will not be visible.

Application of Slip patterns

Slip-knitting is quite versatile and can be not only monochromatic, but also colorful (with a change of colors), and also combines well with other knitwear. In addition, slip-knitting is the basis for double-cut jacquards and pleated patterns, which are also performed on two plates (volume patterns).

Once again, I remind you that almost all p/cards can be used as Tuck patterns. I will designate such patterns as “T/S” – “TUCK/SLIP”.
